Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) today again endorsed the Senate Bill that has been once thought dead, but now awaits several hurdles after its passage of the cloture vote earlier today, 64-35, with 16 Republicans switching from "Nea" to "Yea". As pathetic as it may sound, these "Former" Senators (as they are now being called) are facing a potential backlash that could very well cost them their seats come election time. The "Base" of the Republican Party is fed up and had enough. At the time, not only are the conservatives bent, but the middle (moderates, independents) as well as the liberals (mostly, at least the SANE ones) want this shot down NOW.
This "Comprehensive Immigration" Shamnesty is indicative that the Senate, despite floods of calls, faxes and e-mails, does not resonate with the 75% of Americans who oppose the Bill, but rather with the 25% who support it. I, myself, contacted John Ensign, NV, only to get a message that his voicemail inbox was full. Thinking enough of a turnout and fuss had been made, I eagerly awaited the 'wire' to read "Immigration Bill Falters"... only to find yet another phone call, this time getting through before Thursday's vote, will be made and received.
Luckily, the House still has yet to rule, and there's at least a chance they'll shoot it down. With somewhere between 24 and 26 Amendments to the Cloture that will still need to be addressed and voted in the Senate come this Thursday, there's a chance that one or two could be "killer amendments" to stop it in its tracks.
Obviously, illegal immigration (and this ridiculous Bill) are already a slap in the face to any patriotic, law-abiding (think about those poor, cheated immigrants who went the LEGAL route!) citizens; but Democratic House Leadership (Kennedy, Reid, Pelosi) will stop nothing short of cutting the carrot from the string the moment it's passed. Forget the fact that illegals (those violating our laws and crossing the borders unlawfully) cost this nation $20 BILLION; or that they are a drain on the economy by sending illegally obtained, non-reported (otherwise taxable) income back to Mexico, weakening our dollar (Employers hiring illegals being the biggest factor...); or obtaining FREE health care in our hospitals when our own citizens are hassled far worse; and even receive FREE educations at the cost of the taxpayers expense; all in the face of our nation's sovereignty. And let's not forget the forgery that takes place; or the fact that our prisons are overcrowded, with illegals making up about 25% of those incarcerated. (Note: this does not mean to imply only those illegals from Mexico; this Bill needs to seal the border so that NO "undocumented" person unlawfully enters our country, regardless their initial origin. Of course, in passing the Bill, the estimated 12 million illegals already here [primarily Mexicans] will not only receive Amnesty, but will gain the benefit of "Anchor babies" and other generations' immediate families, et. al. to subsequently enter.)
We've all heard somewhere a story whereby an illegal, arrested many times over (usually for the same offense, especially D.U.I.s), runs down and kills American citizens, often groups or crowds; who would otherwise have been deported if the States had to report them to I.C.E. or Homeland Security; but even so, they just keep getting released, come right back, get re-arrested ad nauseum until someone has to tragically die before it even makes headlines in the press or anywhere other than FoxNews (the only network brave enough to report such incidents), if even that. Most go un-reported and neglected deliberately, since they don't fit a "national agenda" that jives with the more important, newsworthy stories like Paris Hilton going to jail and crying about it.
The President's approval ratings are in the tank, dropping approx. 8-10 points to around 28% since this measure began, and Congress is even LOWER with an approval rating of ONLY 23%!
Can anyone seriously NOT put forth a better plan than that of the Senate and it's Shamnesty Bill? Even the long-winded, rhetorical (but usually correct) Bill O'Reilly has a plan that's decent and realistic; how can such a simple matter be ignored for the sake of the safety of this country???
This article by Bryan from HotAir is purely amazing. Check it out for a full, more detailed explanation of why the Republican Senators may have politically postured their votes, pulling a John Kerry "I voted for it before voting against it" move. It's hard to even trust our own Republican Politicians any more.
As Laura Ingraham, Talk Radio Host and Republican Analyst put it: "Here's the deal. We need to decide if we're a country, or not a country. If we want to be part of some Global Marketplace of ideas and economics then that's fine, we can do that, but if we want to be a country, then countries have borders; and we need to enforce these borders. 'E.T.L.'... Enforce The Laws... It's ridiculous to think that the world's greatest superpower cannot secure her borders."
